David Tennant in Litvinenko

David Tennant starred in a drama titled Litvinenko about the famous Russian poisoning case.

The four part series was written by George Kay (who wrote Lupin and Criminal) and was available on ITVX in the UK from Thursday 15th December 2022 and on both AMC+ and Sundance Now in the US on Friday 16th December. It will be broadcast on ITV1 in the UK during 2023.

It was co-produced by Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT). The Nordic, Baltic, Polish and Dutch premiere will be exclusively on NENT Group's Viaplay streaming service.

Global broadcast details in other countries.

David Tennant played Alexander Litvinenko who was a former Russian Federal Security Services and KGB officer who was poisoned to death. It is the story of the Scotland Yard Officers who worked for ten years to prove who was responsible in one of the most complex and dangerous investigations in the history of the Metropolitan Police.

The drama also focused upon the story of Marina (who will be played by Margarita Levieva) who was Alexander's widow who fought tirelessly to persuade the British Government to publicly name her husband's killers and acknowledge the role of the Russian State in his murder.

The drama related how in November 2006 two police officers were called to University College Hospital in London to interview Litvinenko who claimed to have been poisoned on the direct orders of Vladimir Putin.

During the police interviews, Litvinenko provided meticulous details from his hospital bedside about the events leading up to his illness. His information would ultimately help detectives track down two Russians who had poisoned Litvinenko with Polonium 210 which is a highly toxic radioactive substance.

The iconic photograph taken of Litvinenko at his bedside generated international headlines and after he was pronounced dead on 23rd November 2006 Scotland Yard launched its murder investigation.

The series was directed by Jim Field Smith and executive produced by Patrick Spence. David Tennant was also listed as an executive producer.

Litvinenko was produced with the support of many of the key individuals who were involved in the investigation and subsequent public enquiry including former Scotland Yard officers Clive Timmons and Brent Hyatt, along with Ben Emmerson QC and Alexander Litvinenko's family.

Mark Bonnar played Clive Timmons and Neil Maskell played Brent Hyatt.

The press releases did not specify when the drama went into production but it was first rumoured back on Monday 9th September 2019 that David Tennant may appear in a drama about Alexander Litvinenko.
