David Tennant in Hamlet

From July 2008 to January 2009 David Tennant played Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon and in London. Due to its popularity they filmed the play during June 2009 on location in Mill Hill, London.
This was broadcast on Boxing Day 2009 in the UK and will be shown on Wednesday 28th April 2010 on PBS in the US. It was released on DVD soon after transmission.
The production company Illuminations kept a Blog about the filming (plus reviews) and the BBC have an official website about the film.
A special screening of the film was held at the BFI in London on Monday 14th December 2009.

According to posts on GallifreyBase, David Tennant's Hamlet was watched by 825,000 on Wednesday evening in the US. Generally it was very well received by both fans and critics. Updated 30/4

One great quote is "Hamlet aired in the UK on Boxing Day at Christmastime 2009, and more than 900,000 viewers tuned in for the BBC broadcast. In an article in The Observer, Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote: "Like many people, I had my love of Shakespeare reawakened by David Tennant's TV portrayal of Hamlet over Christmas."" It was announced that they would be making an official Hamlet BBC website but that may now be opened after broadcast and will be especially for schools. Unfortunately David Tennant did not make the shortlist of nominations for Best Actor in the What's On Stage Awards (or he may not have been eligible as he only played 11 performances in London) but he was listed in the Special mentions section as " The West End Hamlet head-to-head between David Tennant and Jude Law". On Sunday 25th October Illuminations posted on Twitter that the only pre-broadcast screening of Hamlet will happen on Monday 14th December at the BFI. Tickets go on sale soon to members, followed by a sale to the general public if there are any seats remaining. Updated 26/10
A very detailed interview with David Tennant by Abigail Rokison about Hamlet was printed in an acedemic journal a couple of months ago and is now available online here. Updated 21/10
Michael Boyd reportedly said that Hamlet will be aired on Christmas Day but Illuminations have said that this is not correct. It is unlikely that the BBC will have decided on their Christmas programming yet. Updated 20/10
The RSC posted on 13th October that the DVD will now be available on 4th January 2010. Updated 13/10
The Hamlet DVD is available to pre-order on Play.com here at �12.99. It will be released on 28th December and the cover photo is here. Illuminations posted after this that the American version will be available to purchase during Spring 2010. Updated 20/9
On Tuesday 1st September Illuminations posted on Twitter "Grade started this morning, with DOP Chris Seager refining the images, adjusting the colours - six-day process, finishing Sat". Updated 1/9
Illuminations have also said that there will be no public screenings until it is broadcast on BBC2 and they now expect that to be sometime during the week before Christmas and New Year.
According to Illuminations during the weekend of 22nd / 23rd August composer Paul Englishby and a 15 piece band recorded his original music which was mixed the following day. Starting Monday 24th August there is "further sound preparation" on the filming.
Illuminations posted that on Friday 7th August Hamlet was "picture locked". The expected completion date is the third week of September."
PlayBill.com have an article about Hamlet in which Gregory Doran says "Contrary to press reports at the time, the RSC always had plans to make a recording of this production but had the inevitable long journey in getting the cast together again and securing funding for this project."
On Sunday 2nd August John Wyver from Illuminations posted online here that "We've had back the notes from our co-producers and we've been refining the cut even further. Tomorrow we start the final week of what's called the 'off-line' edit and with luck we'll reach 'picture lock' on Friday. After which we enter the last six weeks or so of final post-production, including the grading, sound mixing and graphics. Everything seems to be on schedule for the moment."
The DVD (with extras) will be released the day after transmission in the UK.
Hamlet will also be screened in both the US and Japan soon afterwards. In the US it will be screened on the PBS show Great Performances according to an announcement at the PBS panel at TCA on Sunday 2nd August.
Hamlet will be screened on BBC in the UK. A date has not been decided yet but it is more likely to be in December rather than October. At the RSC Open Day on 19th July, one of the producers there said that they currently hope to screen it on Christmas Day on BBC2 immediately after Doctor Who is screened on BBC1 but it's too early to know for sure.
Hamlet is currently in post-production which will take until at least October.
David Tennant and all the RSC cast of Hamlet filmed the play during June on location in Mill Hill, London. The production company Illuminations kept a very detailed Blog during filming here.
