David Tennant - Richard II
David Tennant - Richard II
David Tennant - "Richard II is not a hero at all. He's quite a complicated character so I'm daunted by the prospect of doing it justice, but very excited to be given the chance!"

David Tennant starred in Richard II for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon from Thursday 10th October 2013 until Saturday 16th November 2013 (40 performances) before the production transferred to The Barbican Centre in London from 9th December 2013 until Saturday 25th January 2014 (45 performances). David played 85 performances in total. The performance on 13th November was screened in various cinemas around the world and was released on DVD. David Tennant played the title role. The play was directed by Gregory Doran and the Stratford-upon-Avon Press Night was on Thursday 17th October 2013. The London Press Night was on Thursday 12th December 2013.

David Tennant reprised his role as Richard II for The Royal Shakespeare Company during January 2016. This was part of a collaboration between The RSC and The Barbican Centre in London to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

The event was called King And Country: Shakespeares Great Cycle Of Kings which was a 4-play season cycle of four productions in repertoire. As well as David Tennant in Richard II, the other productions are Henry IV Parts I and II and Henry V. Antony Sher and Jasper Britton will appear as Falstaff and Henry IV respectively in Henry IV Parts I and II. Alex Hassell will also follow his performance as Prince Hal in Henry IV Parts I and II as Henry V in the final play in the tetralogy.

The whole event ran between Saturday 7th November 2015 until Sunday 24th January 2016 but unfortunately there were only nine performances of Richard II. These performances started on Thursday 7th January.
David Tennant also tok part in a Richard II panel on Saturday 16th January.

In April 2015 it was announced that the King And Country cycle of plays (including David Tennant in Richard II) will transfer to the US. The performances will be between Thursday 24th March and Sunday 1st May 2016 at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music (BAM) Harvey Theater. David Tennant will play 10 performances of Richard II in the US. Unlike the UK, tickets can be purchased individually for any of the performances of Richard II.
